Profile Updated: June 27, 2018
Residing In Everett, WA USA
Spouse/Partner Lynn St Sauver
Occupation Retired
Children Zoe, born 1995

I've really enjoyed reading about all our old classmates, and am looking forward to seeing many of them at the reunion. I've had a few jobs, was a petroleum engineer, landman, worked for a catalyst service company in oil refineries, and then I was a hod carrier for a mason in Paradise Valley who built finnish fireplaces. My body rebelled so I sought less physical work, and retired in 2012 after 26 years with Boeing in Seattle. My daughter Zoe graduates from college this June, and my wife Lynn is still tolerating me. I hope they give us name tags so we both can remember my name, and I won't have to ask you to repeat yours five successively louder times.
See you in September, if I can find my car keys.

Just got back from California where I dropped in on old friend Steve Chapple - Ahem... visiting scholar at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Had a great lunch with him and Ines, then got a tour of the La Jolla beaches and the Scripps campus ( I couldn't get anyone there to take me seriously). Great to see you Steve, and thanks for signing my copy of "Breakpoint".

I am happy to report that rumours of Jerry Dustin's death have been greatly exaggerated. I had never really heard from anyone who knew the exact circumstances of his death, just that he was probably dead- i.e. he had been living on the streets for years, was in bad shape, hadn't been seen for more years etc. When I was at the reunion I checked for a death certificate at the county courthouse, checking all of Montana back to 2001- he wasn't listed. Then I talked to Connie Dye, who had found out that he was alive and had found his niece on facebook. Thank you Connie! From there I found his brother Dick in Arizona, called him and found that Jerry has been living at the Deer Lodge Rehabilitation and Care Center for the last 4 years, after spending several years at a similar center in Billings. I called Jerry, he is doing surprisingly well after having two strokes and two heart attacks over the years. He needs supplementary oxygen, and says his one joy in life is smoking, he looks forward to his 4 smoking breaks each day. He has no recollection of how he got there, but otherwise his memory of old times seemed quite good. We talked about old times for nearly an hour. I plan on stopping to see him next summer when I next visit Montana.
Thanks again Connie for your help!

Hi Rich-
Boy, do I remember that night. I think that can of Crisco was a weapon of convenience rather than a weapon of choice. I am writing that off as one many other cases of youthful excess that we were lucky to survive. I see you live in Polson; my wife is from Yellow Bay, it's a beautiful area. I hope the intervening years have been good to you, and hope to see you at the reunion!

Sherry, I love your comment about Sally's hysterical sardonic take on life, and ripening into the Buddha. I so agree. I knew Sally since the first grade, I was so sad to learn on this site that she has been gone since 2015. I remember I gave her a ride once from Missoula to Billings, in the early 70's I think.  I spent  the whole trip listening to her extemporize on all facets of the "human predicament", and loving it. Few people can so combine  cynicism and hope, humour and snarkiness into a deftly worded little one sentence story like she could. Her wit gave us strength.

I knew Jerry since we were morning paper boys in the eighth grade, we spent a lot of time together - riding motorcycles, hiking, shooting, anything outdoors. He was tough as nails, strong as a bull, and loved football.   He was a good and generous friend who'd give you the shirt off his back, with a gentle side and a surprising dry sense of humour. I have only one picture of him after all these years, taken in about 1970 while camping in April on the West Rosebud (camping - april- west rosebud? snow? yes, that white stuff is snow! ) with none other than our long time friend Morrie Goan:

Jerry had a schizophrenic episode a few years out of high school, he was hospitalized at Warm Springs for several months - Mike Baston, Dick Goan and I visited him there, he was a different person, heavily sedated,  anxious to get out. I am afraid that was the beginning of a long, slow, decline, Jerry sunk into a self destructive spiral of gambling, drugs and alcohol. The last time I saw him was in the early or mid 80's, he stopped for a night at my house in Bozeman.  He still had that wry sense of humour. He had a long switchblade knife, and he picked up on my girlfriend's unspoken "unease" with his seeming fascination with flipping open the blade and holding it in a ready, menacing position. He postured and puffed about how he needed the knife for self defense and had to be fast in pulling it, and continually needed to practice, which he did - enjoying the role he created. He went out gambling that night, in the morning he was gone, I found his indispensible knife stuck in a wooden beam - tacking up a scrap of paper on which he wrote "Thanks".

I wish I could have helped him more, and been a better friend.
