After graduation I enlisted in the Navy. After almost two years of schools and training, I served as a nuclear qualified Machinist Mate on the USS Long Beach CGN-9 doing three tours in Vietnam. In 1971, I met a Navy nurse who I would marry in 1972 and 45 years later she is still the love of my life. After being discharged I enrolled at Montana State University to study Mechanical Engineering. I was in the Navy Reserve for two years in Billings and then transferred to the Montana National Guard. I graduated as the Distinguished Graduate from the Montana Military Academy in 1977 and was commissioned a second lieutenant Armor. I would spend 13 years in the Montana and Washington National Guard and retired as a Major. After graduation from MSU, I spent the next 25 years ascending the engineering ranks from engineer in training to principal engineer to engineering manager working at Department of Energy sites: Hanford in Tri-Cities, WA; Lawrence Livermore Labs in Livermore, CA; and, the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site in Denver. Shoe horned in there was a brief stint at Plant Vogtle Nuclear Plant in Georgia. Along the way I picked up a MA in Applied Behavioral Science from Whitworth College and a Masters in Environmental Policy and Management from the University of Denver. After Rocky Flats closed in 2001, I worked for the City of Westminster, CO as an environmental consultant for the cleanup of Rocky Flats until 2006. Retirement then called. Camping, fishing, traveling, grandkids, brewing beer, BBQ competitive cook and BBQ judge take up my time now.

School Story

Simpler times. Good people, good friends, good memories.

The KIA bracelet that I have been wearing for my friend Mike Padilla for almost 50 years. This is the third or fourth one as they wear out. I also wear a Thin Blue Line bracelet for my three kids that are a retired police officer, a deputy sheriff and a state trooper.

"One lovely summer day
As I was walking through the grass
Reflecting on the very fondest
Memories of my past

I past an unfamiliar place
And stopped a while to see
Completely unsuspecting
Of the change this place would bring

I stood before a wall of names

Fifty-eight thousand, two hundred and seventy two
Engraved upon a monument
That pierced the shining sun

And though, to all these names
I was a brother passing by
I looked upon these names
And there was some that caught my eye

It may have been a moment
Or an hour, or a year
I walked up to the names
And leaned in close so I could hear

I closed my eyes and listened
To the pure and priceless truth
And came to understand the love
Of which, this wall is proof

It's said that he who bears
The very greatest love of all
Will sacrifice his life
Before He'll see a dear friend fall

Though people often wonder
Whether such a man is real
I see him now
Through these engraved letters that I feel

He's sitting with his brothers
telling stories as they laugh
Of the greatest game's he'll ever pitch
Of the biggest fish he'll catch

He's standing by his colors
On a hillside far away
He's diving through the amber fire
While others run away

I search through all my memories
Of the noble and the grand
The courage and the truth
That I've been taught to understand

Of all the stories that are told
This shall be told of you
Dear Marine, How you gave your life
For those you never knew."

?You are still with me, Mike.

Our dead brothers still live for us and bid us think of life,
not death-of life to which in their youth
they lent the passion and joy of the spring.
As I listen, the great chorus of life and joy begins again
and amid the awful orchestra of seen and unseen powers
and destinies of good and evil our trumpets sound once more.
a note of daring, hope and will.
I see them now, as once I saw them on this earth.
They are the same bright figures that come also before your eyes and when I speak of those who were my brothers,
the same words describe yours.
~ Oliver Wendell Holmes

?RIP Marine, you are not forgotten.

"The muffled drum’s sad roll has beat
The soldier’s last tattoo;
No more on Life’s parade shall meet
The brave and fallen few.
On Fame’s eternal camping-ground
Their silent tents are spread,
And Glory guards, with solemn round
The bivouac of the dead."

?Theodore O'Hara

RIP Marine, you are not forgotten.
